The Pretender is the fourth album by the American singer-songwriter Jackson Browne, released in 1976. It peaked at No. 5 on Billboard's album chart. The singles from the album were Here Come Those Tears Again, which reached No. 23, and The Pretender, which peaked at No. The Pretender was released after the suicide of Browne's first wife, Phyllis Major. The album has production by Jon Landau and a mixture of styles. The title track was used in the 1995 film Mr. Holland's Opus. Dinner was a decent songwriter who had the good sense to employ John Boylan as producer, who, I'm sure, was responsible for assembling the great cast of supporting musicians on this album: Bob Warford, Ed Black, Linda Ronstadt, Al Perkins, David Lindley, etc. This album still sounds great, though some of the tunes are not as strong as I remembered them. Some are downright pretentious. Texas Knight was a favorite when I first heard it, but now it makes me cringe a bit. The Great Pretender is a popular song recorded by The Platters, with Tony Williams on lead vocals, and released as a single on November 3, 1955. The words and music were written by Buck Ram, the Platters' manager and producer who was a successful songwriter before moving into producing and management. The song reached the UK charts peaking at No. Buck Ram reports that he wrote the song in about 20 minutes in the washroom of the Flamingo Hotel in order to have a follow up to the success of Only.
