I think this re-issue sounds great. However, this is from someone who has never owned this album or heard an original pressing in person but it sounds great on my system. Very lively and I noticed the bass straight away. My pressing was very flat and I experienced no surface noise. Great packaging.

Now better known as the Light Album, Giles buggered this one up I am afraid. Good to know Macca is in Abbey Road as we speak with Giles overseeing the rework of Abbey Road 50th. This should be deleted for good. Save up and get a copy of something earlier, even an 84 copy out plays this one hands over.

'A forensic re-creation for the 'Ed Sheeran' generation' - Giles Martin's own words. It's rubbish, don't waste your money. Get a decent copy of the original recording pressed between '68 and '00 and you'll hear the album as it was intended to be heard.

Better known as "The White Album", this LP is not the work of a band, but is the starting point towards the separation of The Beatles that would be consummated just two years later. Musically, the album covers a huge range of styles, from country to heavy metal, through reggae, folk, surf, swing and of course pop and rock. This eclecticity it’s because Lennon, McCartney and Harrison worked separately, giving free rein to their individual concerns and not counting too much with other opinions. For all this, this album seems to me like a jewel of the fourth art. “Good night”.Instagram: @musicaligera

Some noise surface on side 2 disc 1Bass on “birthday” is so loud, overload input cartidge.Effect added on “honey pie” listen a little bit strange.Over all is a good work, clean highs and strong bass.Labels are a little uncentred

Giles Martin seems to get a lot of grief about the work he has done. If there is anyone more qualified to re-mix AND re-master an album of this cultural significance deserves, it's Giles. What I immediately notice is that I can hear Ringo. The bass is authoritative and tight. I keep finding other nuances that, after more than 40 years, I had never experienced. This is a masterpiece, the way it was supposed to sound. Or, so they tell me! IMHO, this is by far the best mix through the decades. George Martin spent 3 weeks on the mono mix. He spent 3 days on stereo. Mono outsold stereo in the UK at the time. I don't blame George...This was the way things were. Us, in the USA, only had the stereo version for quite some time. Maybe someday I will pick up the mono version. Highly recommended.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of surface noise on my copy. Crackle is the first thing I hear... I'm very disappointed in those who pressed this album. This is a rough manufacturing defect. Surprised by the "German quality" of work. It is a shame that I do not have the opportunity to make a complaint to the manufacturer.--------------------------------Sound superb.

I had exactly the same issue with my copy, far too much surface noise to bare. I’ve fathomed that records tend to suffer from surface noise but this was just embarrassing. You’d expect more from a £40 reissue.

The images posted are not from the 2 LP version as they include the Esher Demos which do not form part of the 2LP package.

Well worth it, I'd argue that the album has never sounded better. As much a like re-issues to stay true to the original, this mix blasts every exspectaion I had. Bass is finaly big and fat and the guitar and pianos are hitting the treble clearly. Everything is got just the right amount of compretion on so that your able to hear evrything. This mix and mastering realy brings this such important recording into the 21st century. If only all re-issues could have this time and love put towards them.

A bit pricey and not worth having if you have decent copy(ies) of this masterpiece. If not, it's pretty much a good way to listen to this album. Rich mix, does not sound overproduced. Package wise, standard 4 pic poster combo, vinyl is pflat and produces minimal surface noise, if any at all.

Mine is No. 005545. This is a truly great sounding edition, in my opinion probably the best sounding stereo repress out there. Seems the trust in the the famous "Made in Germany" quality stamp actually is warranted in this case. Got mine (VG+/VG) in a second hand store in outer Copenhagen for less than 20€ and it an true winner at that price. Can highly recommend this edition.

Serial number on cover can also start with a dot, if I'm not mistaken.
I'd need a confirmation on that though.

While not as good as the UK white vinyl. A solid pressing all the same. Certainly better than some of the digital sourced pressings. Well worth adding to your WA collection, considering other versions and pricing, this is a bit undervalued. Grab it while it still is fairly low cost, that won't be the case forever.

mine has some dark streaks looking about label colored, like part of the label got wet when it was being pressed and the water splattered outward in a few places.

My copy also has some streaks on it. Doesn't affect playback.

Good, but not what I wanted ...

The term ‘Classic Album’ gets tossed around far too often, though when it comes to The Beatles, as especially The White Album, it sincerely is a classic album on more levels than I care to go into here.

Current thinking, and I’m one who supports it, as I lived though those times, is that this was the album where the Beatles faced their demons as individuals and as members of the band who profoundly changed the world, who were on the verge of a breakup … one that would signal the end of the hazed psychedelic 60’s. With the release of this massive collection, and the material is rather lengthy and all encompassing, you’re going to find those who will attempt to reenforce the idea that the Beatles where hard at work as a team on this outing, that they were still functioning as a unit. Yet it’s precisely the solo stripped down demos that show the fractures in all their glory. Regardless of what you may think, the Beatles were not so self absorbed that they were not able to find a way of working together, or at least in and around each other to bring this album into the light, allowing it to shine for all it was worth.

As with the 2017 release of Sgt. Pepper, this collection, as good as it is, does not connect any dots, it does not answer any questions, nor are mystic messages delivered from beyond the graves. Again, as with the remixed Sgt. Pepper, the album has been described as “a real ear opener.” Well, I can assure you that my ears were fully opened and paying attention when this album first found its way into my collection. I’m not sure how profoundly more effected I should be here, certainly more immersed in the sound, but listen, I’m wagging a finger here, so listen … “The White Album was recorded in mono in 1968, it was the last mono mix of a Beatles’ album, hearing this album in anything but mono is to do yourself a disservice, if you truly want to have an ear-opening experience, get ahold of a mono mix drawn from the original source tapes, and hear what you were intended to hear.

Let’s look at some of the songs one by one with due consideration:

“Back In The U.S.S.R.” The airplane overdubs occur in different places on the mono and stereo versions. The mono version has louder piano, a yell after the opening plane sound, along with prominent drumbeats under the closing plane sound. The stereo version has extra guitar chords at the start of the solo, along with shouts and piano playing during the guitar solo.

“Dear Prudence” The stereo version has slightly more treble and fades to a lower volume at the end.

“Glass Onion” The edit adds to the end orchestral piece. The stereo mix is lacking Paul’s added vocal “oh yeah” at the end of the break. The mono mix has various sound effects, of which only the whistle after “fool on the hill” was used in the standard mix.

“Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da” The stereo version has hand clapping during the intro, the mono version does not. On the mono mix, Paul’s vocals are not double tracked for a fuller effect, on the stereo mix this has been separated, which gives the allusion of two or more Pauls singing at once.

“While My Guitar Gently Weeps” The stereo version has some vocal sounds from George at the end, the original mono version does not. The Clapton guitar remains loud in the mono version after the solo break, though not in the stereo version. Near the end of the fadeout only the stereo has “yeah yeah yeah”, even though it is a few second shorter.

“Blackbird” The bird sound effects are quite different between the stereo and the mono release, just take a listen.

“Piggies” The pig sound effects are quite different between the stereo and the mono release. The guitar is notably louder in the mono version.

“Don’t Pass Me By” The mono version is much faster than the stereo, and therefore much shorter. The violin sounds at the end are markedly different. Along with the mono running faster, it also has more fiddle throughout the song, along with a different fiddle at the end. The fiddle at the end of the stereo seems a repeat for a bit of the chorus. The edit also added to the intro. The stereo mix has only work from 5th and 6th of June without the fiddle or intro that was added in July. It’s also at the speed of the stereo mix.

“Why Don’t We Do It In The Road” The stereo version has hand clapping during the intro, the mono version does not.

“Sexy Sadie” The stereo version has two taps on the tambourine during the intro, the mono version only has one.

“Helter Skelter” The stereo version has a fade-out/fade-in dummy ending with Ringo’s shout of “I’ve got blisters on my fingers”, the mono version does not, which makes the stereo version almost a minute longer. The basic song runs about 3:10 to a pause shortly after Paul’s distorted vocal, caused from being too close to the microphone. The mono version is then edited into more of the same take, with sound effects noises, and fades at 3:36. The stereo version is edited instead to a different part of the take, fading out and then back in again, with another edit, ending finally at 4:29 after Ringo shouts “I’ve got blisters on my fingers!” Is the distorted vocal “Can you hear me speaking” or “My baby is sleeping” or perhaps “dreaming”?

“Long, Long, Long” The stereo version is fine, but on the mono, George’s double-tracked vocal is embarrassingly out of synch, one of the few corrections that actually makes sense.

“Honey Pie” The stereo version has a shorter guitar solo than the mono version.

“Revolution 9” Although the stereo was made from the mono mix, the opening lines are more clear in mono, this is evidently a separate piece of tape added during mixing.

“Everybody’s Got Something To Hide (Except Me and My Monkey)” The screaming after “come on” in the last verse is different in the stereo and mono versions.

“Revolution” The song was deliberately distorted during recording and mixing, so since the mono version sounds more distorted and compressed, methinks it’s better. John’s guitar also sounds louder in mono version.

“Yer Blues” The second generation tape is an edit of two takes, each of the two tapes being itself a mix-down from the original 4 track. The edit causes an abrupt transition at the end of the guitar solos. In stereo, traces of other vocal and guitar parts can be heard throughout the song in the left channel, including something shouted over parts of the vocal and what sounds like another altogether different guitar solo. After the edit, the trace lead vocal suggests we are hearing the first part of the song from the other take. The edit in the mixes added the countdown intro, which is louder in mono. The mono version is 11 seconds longer with the long fade.

“I Will” This started as 4 track and was copied to 8 track, so it’s second generation to begin with. The bass and vocals start later in mono version during the first verse. The stereo version has more prominent bongos and other etherial effects.

“Birthday” The last “daaaance” starts twice, maybe a double-track error or a leak from a guide vocal as heard on stereo, but covered up by other sounds in Mono version. The stereo version also has extra vocals at the end of the second chorus.

“Happiness Is A Warm Gun” The second generation master is an edit of copies and two takes with more material that has been overdubbed. The mono has tapping (organ?) on the beat from the start until the drums come in, but it is soft and mixed out four beats earlier in. In the “I need a fix” section in stereo, by error, although the first line was mixed out, the last “down” is almost audible. The mono has louder bass in the “I need a fix” section. The mono has laughter near the very end, just before the last drumbeat, this is not heard in second generation mono or the stereo.

“Honey Pie” The mono has the full lead guitar break, slightly shortened in the stereo version.

“Savoy Truffle” One mono version has sound effects during the instrumental break along with the lead guitar continuing through the break into the refrain after it. The organ is missing from the last verse in the mono version.

“Long Long Long” Doublet racking starts at the first “long” in stereo and sounds somewhat different thereafter. In mono the rhythm guitar is softer but the lead guitar is louder, especially in the later part of the number.

“I’m So Tired” Paul’s harmony at the first “You’d say” is louder in mono. The muttering after the song is intentionally part of this recording.

The mono mixes were never released in the US at the time, only stereo, so getting an import mono copy during those days was a difficult adventure to say the least.

Again, this brings me to the notion that people seem to like what they were initially presented with, an no amount of backtracking is going to change that. Consider that creating a stereo mix from a mono, or even a 5.1 from a mono mix is never going to sound real, it’s the same as colorizing a movie, cute for a moment, but a mere fabrication at best. You can never hear something that wasn’t there, you can only hear an interruption of that something.

I own this collection, I was part of the White Album project, I will never play this collection again. I would sincerely urge you to go find yourself the most pristine mono copy sourced from the original taps as you can, lay down the big dollars, and have a piece of history for both your eyes and ears.
