Album

Exile in Guyville is the debut album by American indie rock singer-songwriter Liz Phair. It was released in June 1993 to widespread critical and commercial success, and it was ranked at 327 by Rolling Stone in its 500 Greatest Albums of All Time list. As of July 2010, the album had sold 491,000 copies. In the summer of 1991, Phair wrote and recorded songs on audio cassette tapes, which she circulated in Chicago using the moniker Girly-Sound. Initially, she sent out only two tapes, one to Tae Won Yu. Full album mash up of Liz Phair, Exile in Guyville. Music is the sole property of the artist. Some critics contend that the album is not a clear or obvious song-by-song response, although Phair apparently sequenced her compositions in an attempt to match the song-list and pacing of the 1972 album. The album frequently appears on many critics' best-of lists. It was ranked 15 in Spin's 100 Greatest Albums, 1985-2005. VH1 Named Exile I. If Exile in Guyville is shockingly assured and fully formed for a debut album, there are a number of reasons why. Most prominent of these is that many of the songs were initially essayed on Liz Phair's homemade cassette Girlysound, which means that the songs are essentially the cream of the crop from an exceptionally talented songwriter. Exile in Guyville is indie rocker Liz Phairs debut studio album, released in June 1993 by Matador Records. The album, which Phair jokingly said was a response album to the Rolling Stones' Exile on Main St. mocks sexism and finds Phair singing about sex from a point of view that was previously explored only by male singers. The album won acclaim from critics, and is still considered by many critics to be one of the best albums of the 90s and of all time. Exile in Guyville Q&A. Album 1993 18 Songs. Music Videos. Yes, Liz Phair-whose delicately anthemic album was a raw rejection of female powerlessness-felt afraid But it would be a mistake to qualify Exile in Guyville as anything other than audacious. The album is often described as a song-by-song rebuttal to the Rolling Stoness Exile on Main Street, but thats only part of the story. Phair didnt just want to make a response to the Stones, she wanted to make an album that stood up to theirs. As she explains in the oral history

I appreciate that a gatefold is esthetically pleasing, I really do. However, I've come to prefer a unipak. Simply because in a gatefold the vinyl is a lot more likely to warp. The platters can easily get 'pinched in' along the edge where the gatefold folds over. I'm grateful to the owner of my local community record store for showing me this. When you put away your beautiful gatefolds folks, it's well worth it to make sure the platters are not getting pinched on the folding edge - or better yet, don't slot the wax in, just keep it all in an outside record sleeve. Oh, and remember that they may actually be doing you a favour when they reissue a record in a unipak ;-)

Named 1993 AOTR by Spin Magazine ahead of The Chronic, In Utero, Rid Of Me, and Siamese Dream among many others, Exile In Guyville holds up as a classic 25 years later. Liz's singing improved on later albums, but her perfectly unpolished croon is still quite endearing here, and it can be heard with crystal clarity on this excellent remaster, which blows away the remastered CD/MP3 release from 2008. If you don't want to shell out $100+ for the original issue, you could do worse than grabbing a copy of this. The vinyl itself is literally the quietest I've ever heard-- if not for a bit of crackling during "Gunshy]", you'll forget you're not listening to a CD.

The 1st press is better sound wise. It’s also collectible. Just look at all of the chumps trying to pawn this repress off at bargain basement prices. Lmao. Stop buying the repress and getting stuck with garbage that has NO (0) value. None. Nada. Nil zilch.

Insulting somebody because his buying preferences is incredibly childish and neurotic

For many people, including myself, the value is in the music and owning it. While I own some expensive first presses, it’s more important that I just own good albums that sound good. This elitist, neurotic concern about what something is worth is jilting the current upward trend of records. Some people just want to own their favorite album.

Cheap single cover, mp3 download included, sounds beautiful. Still, a gatefold with some pics of Liz, would have been nice.

Um yeah, the key thing is the pressing, colored vinyl and gatefolds and all the rest of the goodies (hype stickers, DL cards, booklets, yadda) are entirely secondary to a great, quiet pressing. Which is sadly hard to achieve on a lot of new, capitalize on the vinyl craze reissues. I'm looking at you Anti and Tom Waits. A gatefold is nice, but the key is did they spend the money and time to get this pressed at a place that is decent and is the mastering adequate. Stoked to have this, hoping for the best, will update once I've given it a proper chance.

Fantastic sounding pressing. They did this amazing album justice with this remaster and pressing.

This non-gatefold for 2xLP albums nonsense needs to stop. It's 2018, get it together!
Nilador
Wish it was a gatefold but my copy sounds fantastic and I'm really happy to finally listen to this on an LP :)
