Message in a Box: The Complete Recordings is a four-CD box set by the Police, containing all five of their studio albums in chronological order, as well as non-album singles, non-album B-sides, and tracks from various compilation albums and the Brimstone & Treacle soundtrack 1982. The box set also comes with a 68-page booklet. The box set states that it 'contains every single song the Police ever released' but these are not the complete recordings, due to the box set excluding ten officially. Посмотреть сведения об участниках альбома, рецензии, композиции и приобрести альбом 1993 Box Set от Message In A Box The Complete Recordings на then there are those - like the Police's 'Message In A Box' - which sell themselves as 'The Complete Recordings'. Claims like that are asking for trouble, especially when they appear alongside an official discography that lists at least one track a live version of 'Don't Stand So Close To Me' which is conspicuous by its absence. On those singles, and around a dozen album cuts - from the punk-fuelled raunch of 'Next To You' through the Brit-funk of 'Demolition Man' to the airy philosophical concepts of the 'Synchronicity' album - the Police sound like one of Britain's great rock bands. Despite their legendary status, the Police only released five albums during their brief reign from 1978-1983. In addition, the trio had amassed a healthy amount of both studio and live B-sides, plus songs that only appeared on soundtracks. For the 1993 four-CD box set Message in a Box: The Complete Recordings, every single song the Police ever recorded is included. These are NOT the complete recordings. What is missing, you might ask 1 The US version has the original 1986 version of Don't Stand So Close to Me, while the European one has the dance remix b-side of the original single. If you decide to only buy this, and make it your Police album collection, you won't be doing yourself a disservice. It's a good choice, and a good sound. Too bad it isn't perfect. Released in 1993 this is almost 'The Complete Recordings', but not quite. Don't Stand So Close To Me Live which was the b-side to the 'Don't Stand So Close To Me '86' single. Don't Stand So Close To Me '86 Dance Mix' which was a bonus track on the 'Don. The Police. Group Compilation. Songs in album The Police - Message In A Box: The Complete Recordings 1993. Walking On the Moon There Has to be an Invisible Sun:A glossy boxset with nice booklet... love the chapter "Jung at Heart"! Full discography and rare pics included. The package is replete with hits, album tracks, and rarities! From their early post punk days thru their reggae infused rock to their erudite epics, this has it all!!Yes, it has everything... even "Don't Stand So Close to Me '86". I never liked this slowed down watery version of the awesome original. But it's here to make things feel "complete". However, if the Alien Magnet People came and erased this one track, I would not miss it!That being said, it is well worth searching out! A nice addition to any collection. And the name "Message in a Box" is a clever one!!! .......................................……………………….Much better than "This Box is too Big Without You"!
Always puzzled me that they never updated this with the most recent remastering (2002). Ah well...
No need to. This mastering is superb in my opinion.
Why on earth would you want updated mastering? That usually means over-compressing and over limiting.
Message In A Box collects the complete works of The Police. Not only the five studio albums but also rare b-sides and live tracks are in this box. In addition, Message In A Box a discography and unpublished photographs of the band.
I'm surprised no one has commented on the sound quality of this box set. I always thought it had an off sound to it. Kind of plastic/tinty sound. I really noticed it the most when I ripped it to MP3 about 14 years ago. Don't get me wrong, it's a fantastic collection, but something went wrong during remastering. Glad I still have all my vinyl to fall back on!
I fall back to my sacd's in 2.0 for the best digital playback - that being the sacd layer, not the cd layer. Otherwise my Japanese pressings are just fantastic for analog. I guess hearing, just like taste, is subjective :)
Well, I disagree. I find the remasters on here to be pretty good really. Better than the original CD ones for sure (though if you wander over to Hoffman forums opinions are split on this - an additional note being, it's fairly uniformly agreed that later remasters are not the way to go vs either...).
Yep, I absolutely had the same experience. It sounds dull.
The title says "Complete"; and, up to 1993, when this box set was released, yea, this is freakin' complete. All five of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees' studio albums are here, sprinkled with a few live cuts and B-sides for good measure. From wanna-be punks to "white reggae" specialists to God knows what they became, this trio was always capable of volatile moments on stage and off. This collection also shows just how much they had grown over the years. Nobody could play atmospheric-style guitar the way Andy Summers could. And Stewart Copeland's drum lit, at times, rivaled that of Rush' Neil Peart (by the way, where can I buy some octobans - is that right? - that Stew has?). What Sting has done goes without saying. Maybe it's better that they quit at the top. Frankly, how COULD they possibly do better than 'Synchronicity'? Anyone who saw their recent reunion tour (and shelled the mucho moolah to do so) knows how legendary their status is. Now, they finally have the respect that they deserve. Buy this (preferably form a friend who's in a music club that can get this at a discount) for all the Police you need - unless you wish to find live bootlegs and, of course, the remixes.
