Harvest Moon is the 19th studio album by Canadian-American musician Neil Young, released on November 2, 1992. Many of its backing musicians also appeared on Young's 1972 album Harvest. Recovering from a case of tinnitus that had come about after the recording of Ragged Glory 1990 and its subsequent tour which produced the 1991 albums Weld and Arc, Young returned to the studio with Ben Keith, picking up the acoustic guitar, piano and banjo that had dominated albums such as Harvest, Comes a Time and. But we heard that before: Everything from the unreleased but heavily bootlegged 1977 LP Chrome Dreams to various songs that have appeared on albums throughout the 70s and 80s have claimed that honor. But Harvest Moon seemed like the real thing when it was released on Nov. 2, 1992, especially since many of the musicians who appear on the albums 10 songs also played on Harvest. Plus, theres the tone of the record: stripped-down country-folk songs about love and life, fidelity. Harvest Moon. Released November 2, 1992. Harvest Moon Tracklist. Unknown Legend Lyrics
My RSD copy has been sitting on a shelf as I just couldn't take the sibilance/distortion on Unknown Legend and a few other spots, but I upgraded my stylus from the Ortofon 2m Red to Blue and it is so much better.
It's so easy
44/16!?!?! WHY? This comment doesn't need ten words, just: "44/16"
Neil was always one to embrace the new and do away with the old, even he regrets not using analog masters. But, if you actually care that much, you're a massive nerd. Just sayin'.
B/c that's how it was recorded in 1992, there are no analog masters.
Looks like this will be available in U.S. record stores February 23rd for $24.95.
My copy doesn't have any of the faulty issues some others have described. Love it.
Decent quality overall, some background noise but hoping it plays itself out after several spins. Yes, it’s apparent that it’s not sourced from analog tapes like most of the other Neil Young archive series pressings, but it’s still very solid. Some of the natural organic qualities aren’t quite there due to digital recording, but if this was an album by any number of other artists we’d all be praising it for the fidelity.
Very annoying skip in unknown legend at the beginning of the first chorus she rides a ha.. Then skip.. Does it again later in the song but no other skips on album. Disappointed anyone else have one with skips?
My copy skips in the same place and one other in the same song - very disappointed. I can also see a physical deformity right at the edge of the record that seems to coincide with that spot where the skip happens. The record was very dirty on first taking it out of the sleeve and had a large visible scuff mark across a large part of the surface.
Wondering if it is an actual skip. To me the harmony of Neil and Linda at those very spots is so 'hot' that it sounded distorted. Perhaps the stylus is getting knocked out of the groove from all the vibration? I also heard the same distortion on the next track with the harmonica. I knew I have been needing a new cartridge and this album was the final straw. I broke down and replaced an Ortofon Red with a Denon DL-110. Now I would say the distortion is about 98% gone. I hear it for just a split second on the first chorus still, but A2 sounds perfect now.
Mine skipped on every chorus for Unknown Legend. Skipped on other songs, too, despite no major visible scratches.
Sounds a little too tinny and hollow for my taste. Neil's voice sounds a little distant, a little thin, a little compressed at times but that could be due to the digital source material. That being said, given that a high res digital file was used to master this release it sounds as good as it can for not being cut from analog. My copy has no pressing flaws, plays dead quiet and centered but the sound is muddy, lacking clarity, like digital on vinyl sounds.
Pre-order is up at acoustic sounds; don't think this release was limited to RSD.
I bought my copy for $40 total, knowing that another reissue was probably on its way. I figured I'd eventually be able to buy it for $25 or $30 in a future release but I just couldn't wait. When they say RSD first release it typically means it will be released again months later, just that the RSD version is the first one to come out - not the only one, i.e. not exclusive to RSD. I believe there is a limited pressing for RSD on this one and then the one comes out months later is not a limited quantity pressing.
This is an RSD "First Release" Meaning these reissues will be available exclusively through RSD "first" and then reissued to the general public later on. So if you ever see a "RSD First Release" in the future, rest easy knowing it will see a mass reissue in the near future.
Pressing sounds fantastic for me, loving this RSD release :)
My version seems a bit noisy (vinyl noise, not from recording). Curious as to what others experience,
my copy is quiet as a mouse. the sound quality is AMAZING. Have you tried cleaning it with a solution (you can make your own with 91% isoporopyl alcohol and distilled water) ?
Don't give into greedy flippers as you will have plenty of opportunities to buy this.
Anyone know why this isn’t part of his Neil Young Archives Offical Release Series (NYA ORS) like all his other reissues, boxset or otherwise? Seems strange and makes me wonder how much Neil had a say in this release or if Warner/Reprise just wanted to cash in a bit on a popular Neil LP which is rare on vinyl? This will definitely see rerelease again.
Neil actually regrets recording this in 16/44 digital over analog recording. I think this would be an album that would probably benefit from Analog recordings, but thats life.
Probably all marketing, with a hint of NY quality control. I compare it to Tom Petty's "Wildflowers" 2016 RE. That one sound sooooo good. Very happy to have these two records on LP now.
So it's mastered off the CD quality version? Does anyone know if it sounds better or worse than the original pressings?
Der Bat
Originally this was recorded digitally in 1992. If i researched this correclty
It sounds better. Vocals (lead and background) are paralyzingly good. Beautiful harmonica.
Neil recorded everything digitally in that time. " Neil recorded everything at 44.1khz 16 Bit from Everybody's Rockin to Sleeps With Angels".More here: being said this new pressing sounds clean and pressed flat, which I am especially thankful for after getting a defective Hitchhiker LP. I've never heard the German press but this is certainly worth the $25 I paid for it new.
I never understood exactly how this was recorded and mixed, but I thought tape was in there somewhere, On the whole I find it compares well with my original copy, certainly less noisy, though I detect a tad of lost creaminess, or resonance decay in the high end that in certain places just takes me there. I wonder if Chris used his tube or solid state path. Not sure why this would be but without knowing how the original was mastered, I can’t speculate on the slight loss. Perhaps the digital master was originally copied to tape but not here. I thought I remember reading that Neil walked through a metal detector at an aiport and messed up the original master. It’s definitely worth owning, especially at a hundred less than my original. The truth is though that this album was very well recorded and up there with his best albums and there is no reason why he shouldn’t have done everything possible to make this better than the original, since this is the final remaster for his reissue series. I was really excepting it to be issued in a box with the next release on 180g. I’ll bet they went Direct from digital, but attempted to make up for it by spreading out on three sides, which probably helps. This is, arguably, his best album, why wouldn’t he put on 180g. It doesn’t make sense.
Hey! Thank you for educating me. I thought the Record was analog sourced.
The original recording is digital, as were all of Young’s albums from the late-1980s through the early-1990s, until he decided he preferred analog. So even if you bought an original of this (or “Freedom” or “Ragged Glory” etc.) it is still a digital master.
Not necessarily. This was issued in Europe, So it probable/possible that they mastered from the earlier LP. NY is kind of a stickler for sound quality.
Sold out this morning at my local store but I expect this to be reprinted later on down the line past RSD BF 2017. This is Neil Young were talking about. I'm sure he'd hate for his fans to miss out on this.
The is a RSD Black Friday first release. Yes it will be released a little later. Plus 5000 is quite a large release number. There is nothing special about this release except for the RSD sticker on the shrink. It's not numbered either. So either wait for the price to come down here or check You should be able to get it for about $25. $45 is ridiculous.
Yikes.. Was thrilled to get this a couple of days early but a bit of unexpected/unpleasant sibilance right out of the gate on those amazing Linda Ronstadt backing vocals on 'Unknown Legend', and what appeared to be a smudge but is in fact a scuff on B-side that covers much of B2 and B3 with surface noise. I'll be returning this copy and getting another. Cleaned it on an Okki Nokki, to no avail.UPDATE: The 'scuff' was my copy only. The replacement copy is scuff free
Yes. The pressing is flat and smooth, and everything else about the sound is fine, EXCEPT those backing vocals on UL. I have 4 friends with copies purchased in other parts of the country who all complained of the same sibilance issue.
But what about the sibilance on UL? Still there? I have it on mine.
My copy has similar sibilance on Unknown Legend with what sounds like a distortion on backing vocals. After that, no problems.
