Deerhunter- Halcyon Digest ALBUM REVIEW. Genre: Indie Rock. Its not as immediate as previous Deerhunter albums, but Halcyon Digest has an appeal all its own: Its as difficult to grasp - and as hard to shake - as a memory lingering at the back of your brain. Full Review. Halcyon Digest is Deerhunters fifth album. The album features the bands trademark meshing of shoegaze and pop, with song lengths ranging from a quick two minutes to a complex seven-and-a-half. Released on September 28, 2010 to nearly universal acclaim, it cemented the bands status as one of the most inventive groups of the 2000s. The Japanese version of this release included two bonus instrumental tracks, Rhythm and Colorscale. Halcyon Digest Q&A. Halcyon Digest reveals a quieter, sometimes gentler Deerhunter than expected, and while Cox doesn't exactly sound tired, there's an occasional rasp in his voice that wasn't there before. Instead of emphasizing sonics that spiral out into the stratosphere as they did on Microcastle or Rainwater Cassette Exchange, the band focuses on the dream part of their dream pop. Halcyon Digest is a record about the joy of music discovery, the thrill of listening for the first time to a potential future favorite, and that sense of boundless possibility when you're still innocent of indie-mainstream politics and your personal canon is far from set. In revisiting that youthful enthusiasm, Deerhunter brilliantly rekindle it, and the result meets MicrocastleWeird Era Cont. as the band's most exhilarating work to date. Deerhunter have never lacked ambition. 2007 breakout Cryptograms came as two discrete halves: one front-loaded with ambient drifts and clanging post-punk aggression, the other blasting off into sunny psych-pop. Deerhunter Halcyon Digest. 0 excellent. by Lewis STAFF October 18th, 2010 702 replies. Release Date: 2010 Tracklist. Review Summary: A great album, tweaked. Ill retract a bit to delve into my first paragraph. For a while I sat on Halcyon Digest and found myself dissatisfied. Earthquake has all the trappings of a great intro, and services the titillating build-up that has become a staple of releases such as this, which I leave in quotations only to point out the absurdity I felt in this pandering. As soon as Dont Cry lifts and locks into its groove, its abrupt mood-shift rings hollow, unable to contend with the heavy atmosphere that lingers heavy over the succeeding album. Listen free to Deerhunter Halcyon Digest Earthquake, Don't Cry and more. 11 tracks 45:01. Halcyon Digest is the fourth studio album by American indie rock band Deerhunter. It was the band's first album distributed exclusively by 4AD worldwide previously 4AD only handled overseas distribution while Kranky Records handled it within the U. S The album was self-produced with assistance from Ben Allen and was recorded at Chase Park Transduction studios in Athens, Georgia. Marrying punk grit with the romantic lilt of doo-wop ballads and early '60s pop, the band created a kind of modern noir-seductive and mysterious but alluringly rough around the edges. Songs like Revival and Memory Boy ring out like a basement-dwelling version of The Byrds Basement Scene is their La Bamba -a fascinating take on the past by one of the presents most unusual indie rock bands.
