Overall a nice sounding pressing, but it certainly needs to be cranked to get any juice out of it.
By all accounts this is the best version of the remasters. It is a quiet pressing but the bass is more audible than the CD version. I have read that manufacturing quality is higher than recent releases as well.
It's confirm for me that the master tapes was awful! I have this on CD, FLAC & now Vinyl and recordings are really not loud enough. I love all the songs on this album though, that's why I bought this in various type of version.
Quietest record in my collection. Even when I turn it up to max, I still can barely hear it. If it wasn't for that, it would be a good pressing.
I'm pretty sure the labels in the picture are of the Universal release, not the Warner Bros. Mine matches with every other number on this page, even the labels look the same. Except mine has the WB logo at the top (where the picture for this release shows Universal).
I have the same one that you do with the WB logos
This is not the EU release...this is a duplicate of that one:
Justice in all it's glory on vinyl it sounds AMAZING!!
I agree with the dynamic range comments and how its quiet, but as long as you turn it up it's fine. Sounds good to me on my Sennheiser hd700's though!
How do you make a record this quiet and still manage to lose all of the dynamic range?
Wow... What an absolutely terrible reissue. Definitely looking forward to the anniversary reissue. Hopefully done just like the first 3 anniversary box sets.
I have to crank my Marantz 2270 up to roughly 50% volume to get any sound out of this pressing. Poor pressing - do avoid.
Just bought it used today and I'm going to ask for my money back. I have a loud stereo and this record has to be played at excessively high volumes. Because it's used, any tiny dust particles or scuffs are severely loud because the record is so quiet. Even in the loudest parts the dust rocked harder than the vinyl. If you're looking to buy a album to rock the dust, buy this.
Prince Persie
Skip this one. I think they're remastering it for a proper pressing; I'll be trading this one in and buying that one once it's released. This sounds like garbage. Pressed so quietly that you have to crank it, and then you can hear every molecule of dirt in the groove. Less bass than usual, even considering that there isn't any to begin with.
A absolut horrible mastering for this great Record! its disappointing to listen...
Yes must agree, was so disappointed with the sound on this, its so low, and just does not sound good at all!
Hidden Winter
I'll have to agree with the majority here that this version is not that good. It's almost similar to what I would call "radio quality". You would expect better with the amount of $$$ made in their claim to fame of this album being #5 greatest heavy metal album of all time. Instead it seems to be either sheer negligence or a cash grab in the management of this "self released" version of a classic album. The band themselves stated that the original recording wasn't the best quality to begin with & with that you can't expect a miracle. You can however with the current technology at least replicate the original quality or better. This in my honest opinion was done with the 2008 remaster under the Warner Bros label. It was half speed mastered at Mobile Fidelity from the original analog master tapes. Mobile Fidelity later gained quite a reputation for their quality reissues of classic albums in all fields under their name. This better version I speak of (2008) has this quality but at it's time of release, it seems that it was in the early stages of the big resurgence of vinyl marketing so it was not advertised to a target audience of audiophiles that now search for Mobile Fidelity (MOFI) reissues & half speed mastering. Those not so familiar with this level of audio quality are often into vinyl collecting as a simple or novel hobby & would probably be happy with any version. This demographic trend commonly uses affordable or budget conscience hardware that is often seen in combo media devices or portables.
Read some bad reviews and was a little sketchy upon buying but I decided to pull the trigger and was not disappointed. It sounds good but you have to turn up the volume.
Why does this pressing sound so bad? Two words. Rainbo Records. That pressing plant should be put out of business. They aren't because they are a cheap(er) record plant, costing Metallica or any other company using them less. Find the 4LP 45RPM box or even the 2lp version from 2008. Both are better, much quieter pressings.
Abandoned Electrical
I'm really just reiterating what many others have mentioned: this pressing should've never passed QA.I'm not talkIng about the mix... that's for another thread, I'm talking the actual pressing is bad. Gotta push the trim on the preamp from unity (where a vast majority of records of just about any genre sits proper) to as far as my pioneer 707 goes... once pegged it'll put out a proper signal, but any surface noise that might occur is amplified by 10db or more. It's arguably usable for home use IF you are OCD about keeping your records clean and bought it new and cheap, but I'd definitely avoid using it in any live setting. I mean... I spin anything and have for a couple decades, and no joke, the only records I can think of off the top of my head that are as poorly pressed as this is some mid-60's peanuts/Charlie brown kids album and a horrendous pressing of the original war of the worlds radioplay, both of which I had kept around for random samples... I just never ever have to push the trim so damn hard to get the record to meter unity at the outputs. It's crazy that this product made it to print without anyone in the chain of command putting the kiabosch on it and ordering up another test printing.
This is the first time I've actually heard a little bit of bass on this album since I bought the original cassette on the day of its 1988 release. Other than that, I agree with most that this pressing doesn't sound great. Although, there is no version/pressing in existence that will ever sound great due to the horrible original recording and mix committed to analog tape. But the sheer nostalgia and love I had/have for this and all the pre-black album Metallica material outweighs the quality of any production, good or bad.
Has a decent amount of surface noise, especially on songs like One and the start of Blackened.
Bad pressing. The volume is too low. The record itself has too much noise and looks very discolored. I wish the album was a gatefold too, I hate that they didn't even use the original labels on the record and opted to use the stock ones found on their other reissues of their catalog (Kill 'Em All-Justice only). Its a big disappointment and it could have been done so much better, I recommend that if you can find an original issue for a decent price DO IT! The only thing this record is good for is sticking the jacket in a frame and using it as wall art.
The worst vinyl I have ever purchased. Unwrapped it, listened to Side I & II, drove up to UPS and sent back to Amazon. Lost $4 on the transaction. It is literally unlistenable. Wish I had referenced discogs first. so pissed. ???? quite, except the surface noise; it's loud AF. No bass. Has anyone identified a good pressing? Which one should I be looking for? I need ONE in my collection.
The 2008 Warner Brothers reissue at half-speed mastering has been satisfactory to me.
The pressing is quite. And the quality is similar to the CD's pressing. Things like quite bass and loud guitars/drums that this album was already known for are there. If you want to have a copy around to listen to I would recommend grabbing it.
mym Ђудęm ęгσ НuK
One of the worst records I bought. Sound so lean, silent and with ton of background noise. I have 50 years old records sounding better than this one. What a shame!!!
Do not buy this record. These re-issues are terrible and this is the worst one. The worse sounding record I own. Look for the original releases in the record store instead.
Brand new out of the wrapper, this is one of the most unlistenable, noisy pressings I have EVER heard. I got to "Frayed Ends of Sanity" and had to turn it off.
you secret
Wasn't this recording historically low in bass? Some sort of Jason Newsted snub? Anyway, I don't know the history accurately, but this disc is very light in the bass dept. So you gotta crank it!
That's what I'm trying to remember now as well... but I noticed that the drums also lacked punch to them. Sounds delicate but you would expect more with the kick drums.
Yeah the story was that Lars was sitting in at the final mix down and told the engineer to drop Jason out of the mix.
Mastering level is a little low, but as soon as blackened starts your gonna be "awwww yeeeeaaahh" and crank it to ludicrous levels any how. Basically it's a copy to snag if you don't feel like paying a ton for a better mastered version. It gets the job done, again better versions are available. Don't pay more than 25.00 for it.
Longitude Temporary
This is a shockingly bad pressing. It's mastered at such a low volume that you have to crank it WAY up just to hear it, at which point there is a hiss in the background. I previously owned the original 1988 Elektra pressing and it beats the Blackened pressing by a mile. I haven't heard the 2008 or 2010 pressings but I'd stay away from this one.
why are recent pressings almost always very quiet its very annoying
Steer clear of this pressing. I don't normally hear differences between different record pressings, but this one is hard not to hear how bad it it. The volume is very low, there is a hum, and there is basically no bass. I was in Hot Topic with my daughter, saw this, and grabbed it. That was a waste of $30 as it is so bad, its not even listenable. Packaging is nice though....
Be careful of these Blackened label releases, mastered super quiet so you have to crank it to hear the music. Wouldn't be so bad if it weren't for the terrible quality control on the vinyl full of scratches and scuffs straight out of the packaging. Save your pennies for old Megaforce/Elektra, etc. FWIW the Black album on the Blackened label is decent, cut by Chris Bellman @ Grundman if you can find a flat and clean copy.
