Subnation Scottie forthcoming on Deep Jungle Records . . .
First heard Scottie on Luv NRG, a pirate radio station in Manchester back in December 1993! Was totally blown away by this tune big time! Loving the Evil Dead samples. A heavily jungle/drum 'n' bass-influenced track that was definitely a taste of things that were to come in the years that followed!Timeless classic! <3 <3 <3
That Scottie Remix has got to be the best version of this track in existence. Probably the best of all the Scottie, Ricky, Johnny tunes for that matter. More Evil Dead 2 samples than you can shake a stick at. "I have seen the dark shadows moving in the woods" sample with those eerie strings and laughs (also from the movie) gets me every time. Too bad it's the only one I don't have and costs a bloody mint! Someone should repress this (hint hint) :)
It's all over the place ???????????????????? behave. Original Scottie was unique and unlike ANYTHING that came before it.. Hearing this for the first time bitd was mind blowing tbh.. The remix is awesome of course but would be nothing if it wasn't for the storm the OG made.
I much prefer the remix too, Whilst the original was true to its time, its all over the place, it hasnt aged well IMHO .PLUR
You like the remix version huh? It's different, I've never heard it used before. I actually really dig the flipside tune, it's quite happy and uplifting despite the dark vocal. Thank you very much for this Chris, I really appreciate it.
Totally agree.. which I why I was very patient and waited over two years for a reasonably priced (still not cheap) copy to come up and snapped it up. Essential purchase and prized record
Am in total agreement there. The remix doesn't crop up on any compilations either making it hard to get and very expensive! Been after this for so long!

Awesome tune! I've both the original and also this remix on yellow vinyl, but sadly this one got slightly warped when a mate put it against a warm air vent in my old house after a mixing session... Sad times!
Watch a superb video to the remix here. All the samples from the Evil Dead film in time to the video. Well produced and a classic Scottie tribute. When I first heard the remix I couldnt believe how dark it was and chopped up more than some of the characters in the film. I f the link does not work go to you tube, type in Subnation andf look for misseverythingtoo. Enjoy, Darkside horror at its best. Also look at missys other vids as he has a couple to dnb and a video to Dj Excels "jaws" tune. The flip side contains the original which is excellent as well. I cant enter the url so go to youtube type "scottie evil dead video" and have a watch.
"Scottie" is a legendary Amen Break based timeless Jungle masterpiece that devastated the dancefloors and will always remain a standard of the genre. The Remix version opening the A Side has a very funny sample from the movie Evil Dead where the professor is translating an ancient booklet about the evil where he says, recording on tape: "I see the dark shadows moving in the woods". There are other samples from it, like on the moment where one of the couples' girlfriend says "I don't wanna die! You're not gonna leave me, are ya?", and the guy answers "You're not gonna die!" among other samples of ghost laughings. The beats are made from the storming Amen Breaks (from the original "Amen, Brother" by The Winstons, 1969) combined with the bassline is very strong & intense. The orginal verison is the better one from this single to play on the dancefloors; it starts with some of Evil Dead's samples "Is there only around the bridge?" "I'm not gonna die!" and the title's theme, "Scottie!" (which is one of the movie's characters). There is an amazing double breaks mixture, a melting of hot shot Amen Break snares with the other Breaks from the very beginning of the tune played backwards, and a deep-obscure bassline, resulting in a cataclysm. On the B Side, "Somebody Always Dies" is based on Sharon Stone's sample "Somebody Has To Die" from the movie 'Basic Instinct' where her character tells the one of Michal Douglas that somebody has to die on the story she was writing for her book. You can also hear Rochelle Fleming's sample "Ooohh!" from the classic "Let No Man Put Asunder" by First Choice.
The main break is off 'Cold Sweat' by James Brown, also used in Brown Paper Bag & Spiritual Aura. Can't find an original recording of it on YouTube, unfortunately, but I love what they've done with it here, playing it backwards. The whole sound of that break conjures up images of the word Scottie, if that makes sense! If I remember correctly it's literally played on its own by James Brown's drummer Clyde Stubblefield for a second or so, just enough to be able to take all the parts from it (kick, hit & snare) to recreate that legendary break. All the drums used in Scottie are so tight it's an absolute joy to mix, makes me wonder why the original flip track (Golden Hen) is so badly cut-up & a nightmare to mix. They use the same Cold Sweat beats but they are badly layered and just not in sync with the rest of the tune which is a real shame. Scottie is an all time fav, and outshines Johnny & Ricky in my honest opinion, the production for the time is mind-blowing. The other mix is wicked in its own right, a real darkside workout but when I have the record to hand and it comes to choosing between the 2 I go for the original every time! Scottie is also available on a Slammin Vinyl album and is a gd quality repress, bearing in mind the original of Scottie on this one sounds pretty terrible, lacking in treble and being put on the end if the vinyl instead of having a while side to itself like on 'Scottie's sub' so be careful when parting with your cash for this press if it's only the original you're after, there's far better sounding copies out there
