Live at Max's Kansas City is a live album by the Velvet Underground recorded at the famous nightclub and restaurant at 213 Park Avenue South in New York City. It was originally released on May 30, 1972, by Cotillion, a subsidiary label of Atlantic Records. The Velvet Underground signed a two-album deal with Atlantic in early 1970 and released their fourth studio album, Loaded, in November 1970. There's a certain amount of disagreement among Velvet Underground scholars regarding whether or not this album, recorded by Andy Warhol associate and longtime fan Brigid Polk on a portable cassette recorder on August 23, 1970, does in fact document Lou Reed's final appearance with the VU. Though New York City eventually serves as a showcase for every big-time rock group, it spawns very few - and the Velvet Underground was about the only group that denizens of the ultimate terminal city could call their own. The occasion was a summer-long gig at Maxs, a gathering spot for artists, poets, hustlers, queens and princes as well as musicians - in short the perfect place for the Velvet to boogie. The album opens with Reed inviting the audience to dance, introducing a tender folk ballad of love between man and subway, then stomping into Waiting For The Man. Loved hearing again - VU gems such as the awesome I'm Waiting For The Man, one of their true signature tunes Sweet Jane, Beginning To See The Light, the well-written Pale Blue Eyes and Sunday Morning. A bit of a downside for me was when between songs, an audience member yells out a request for Heroin and vocalist Lou Reed replies back Sorry, we don't play -Heroin- anymore
