The Mandrake Memorial formed in late 1967 when producerpromoter Larry Schreiber was asked to put together a house band for Manny Rubin's downtown Philadelphia club, The Trauma. Schreiber started with Michael Kac pronounced Katz, a folksingerguitaristbanjoistkeyboardist who was already a regular performer at both The Trauma and Rubin's other club, The Second Fret. This 'lost' album was finally released on the Flashback label in 2016, titled 3 Part Inventions. Returning to Philadelphia, the band began working on a new album, re-working some of the songs from their failed acoustic album. It began life as a New York City band called The Novae Police, featuring Kevin Lally and Randy Monaco. They played in the Village for a while, opening for bands like The Flying Police featuring James Taylor, while Monaco was also doing a lot of demo work, singing on the first demo of Happy Together which The Turtles later recorded. The Mandrake Memorial played at my high school dance in early 1968 and we tried to figure how to dance to their music as their sets tended toward 30 minutes without break. I immediately became a fan. It was a totally different sound. I later heard them several times at the legendary Second Fret in Philadelphia and as warm up group to The Doors August 4, 1968 at the Philadelphia Arena.
