After the original production by Troy Tate was felt to be inadequate, John Porter re-recorded the album in London, Manchester and Stockport during breaks in the band's UK tour during September 1983. The album was well received by critics and listeners, and reached number two on the UK Albums Chart, staying on the chart for 33 weeks. It established the Smiths as a. Arriving in an era dominated by synth pop and gloomy post-punk, the Smiths' eponymous debut was the bracing beginning of a new era. On the surface, the Smiths' sound wasn't radically different from traditional British guitar pop - Johnny Marr's ringing, layered guitars were catchy and melodic - but it was actually an astonishing subversion of the form, turning the structure inside out. The Smiths The Smiths were together for a little over five years, and their career moved at such incredible speed, even they sometimes struggled to keep up. This is very much the story of their debut album. Originally recorded with producer Troy Tate, Morrissey and Rough Trade were underwhelmed by what they heard and hired John Porter to fix it, who felt the albums problems were so severe that it should be re-recorded from scratch. They had one week and a miniscule budget to do so, and in the end, almost half of the album was scrapped and re-recorded again in one frantic overnight sessio. The Smiths' fourth and final studio album, Strangeways, Here We Come, is named after Strangeways prison, which is located in Manchester. Morrissey told Q in 1987: If I ended up in Strangeways I wouldn't be at all surprised. Consequently, they are one of the rare artists with more compilation albums than studio albums.
