The Prague studio recording was 24-bit remastered by the Czech Supraphon label in 2002, and it sounds great. The playing of the Czech orchestra brings an authenticity of timbre and texture that has sadly been lost in today's more international orchestral sounds. This is a world-wide loss and a cost of advances as gifted players move between countries and cultures. He has been regarded in his homeland as the father of Czech music. Internationally he is best known for his opera The Bartered Bride and for the symphonic cycle Má vlast My Homeland, which portrays the history. This recording of Má Vlast, Smetanas great cycle of nationalist tone poems, taken from performances that Bělohlávek conducted at the Prague spring festival in 2014, is the orchestras tribute to one of its best-loved conductors and makes a perfectly apt memorial. They had made a much earlier recording of Má Vlast together, in 1990 for Supraphon, but the new version has a much warmer, richer and more detailed sound than its predecessor.
