Generally considered the career breakthrough, and some would even say pinnacle, of the Allman Brothers' career, the 1971 concert album At Fillmore East was a huge success for the band. A landmark of classic rock, At Fillmore East, recorded over several nights in March 1971, captured the live intensity and almost psychic group interplay between the bandmembers, largely centered on the guitar tête-à-tête of Duane Allman and Dickey Betts. The 37 performances on The 1971 Fillmore East Recordings represent 13 different songs, which allow comparison and analysis of the sound evolution taking place in a compressed space of history. The Allman Brothers Band performed 300 concert dates in 1970. That type of performance schedule will improve any band if it does not kill them first and the evidence of this fire refinement is heard on these recordings. But evolution in the moment, as with all jazz, is evident even in this closed space of time. These Fillmore East shows produced the most perfect electric blues performances on record, bef. Three months after the album's release in July 1971, Duane died in a motorcycle accident that forever altered the group's course in history. They'd go on to score a hit single, a No. 1 album, breakups, disillusionment and a legacy as one of the world's premier jam bands.
