This album is based on the novel “The Catastrophist” by Ronan Bennett.

Short-listed for the Whitbread Book Award in 1998 The Catastrophist is a
haunting novel set in the politically charged landscape of the Belgian Congo
just before independence in 1959.

James Gillespie, an Irish writer, follows his Italian lover Inès Sabiani to
Léopoldville. She is working there as a journalist. Although they are good in
bed together, they are as unlike as lovers can be. He is a pragmatic outsider
and observer, who will not allow his words put at other peoples service, while
she is a passionate supporter of Congolese independence and generally finds
herself part of the story as much as covering it. In a country that is
self-destructing upon giving birth to itself, Gillespie is plunged into violence and
betrayal, and moved by love to a final act of nobility.

It’s a story of failure, not only for Gillespie but also for the Congolese
democracy and at the most, for western politics. The consequences we
can still see today.

Result is a deeply touching piece of music. Ronan Bennett wrote about it:

“….Listening to the songs brought back many vivid memories of the period
I was going through when I wrote the book. I sat in my chair and listened
to it over and over. They are all very beautiful songs – I hear echoes of
Cohen, but also of Waits. If I have a favourite it is “Hold Up The Moon”.
I heard it in my head as I drove into town this morning, and even as I sit
here to write this…..”

The Letter That Johnny Walker Read is a song written and recorded by the American country music band Asleep at the Wheel. It was released in August 1975 as the lead single from their album Texas Gold. The song's title is a reference to the Johnnie Walker Red Label Scotch whiskey. It was their highest charting single, reaching 10 on the Hot Country Singles charts in 1975. It was featured on the Country radio station K-Rose in the 2004 cross-platform video game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. On Sea Change, Beck sounds intentionally world-weary, but it's the songs themselves that sound labored. Is it no longer enough for Beck to write profound, genre-bending tunes that stand on their own Does he really need the crutch of suffocating overproduction and bold strokes of orchestration to shock us into caring again. Given how much soul-searching obviously went into this record, it's distressing how little soul the finished product actually has. If there's anything the self-absorbed murk of Sea Change illustrates with unmistakable clarity, it's that Beck has forgotten how to connect with his inner loser- and it's nobody's fault but his own.
