Stackridge is the 1971 debut album by the English group Stackridge. It was one of the first releases on the MCA Records label in the U. It first appeared on CD in 1997, released by Demon Records in the U. In 2006 it was re-issued again by Angel Air. The Stackridge style is rather hard to categorize. According to the liner notes of the Demon Records CD the group claimed a wide range of influences including the Beatles, the Beach Boys, Frank Zappa, Syd Barrett, Robin Williamson, the Marx Brothers. Stackridge were a British rock group which had their greatest success in the early 1970s. Stackridge Lemon were formed from the remains of Grytpype Thynne by Andy Davis and James Crun Walter during 1969 in the BristolBath area of the United Kingdom. After initial experimentation, the word Lemon was dropped from the band's name. The band played their first London gig at The Temple in Wardour Street on 6 February 1970. They were the opening and closing act at the first Glastonbury Festival between 19. The debut album from Stackridge consists of nine curiously light folk-tinged tracks, with elements of progressive rock cropping up here and there in the friendly Canterbury style. Their music takes on the classic storytelling route, but is bolstered and heightened by instruments like violins, flutes, cellos, trumpets, and the distinct sound of the harmonium played by Andrew Creswell-Davis. Both James Warren and Creswell-Davis take turns at singing such merry lyrical excerpts as 40 missing floorboards, 50 frantic far-out mice below, sounding attractively waggish and peculiarly quain.
