RHP were one of the most consistent bands of the 90's and this is a wonderful way to close that chapter in Mark Kozelek's career. Old Ramon is the sixth and final studio album by American indie rock band Red House Painters, released on April 10, 2001 on Sub Pop. Originally completed in 1998, band leader Mark Kozelek had to wait until 2001 to release the album. The band had previously been signed to IslandSupreme Records, but a series of major label mergers in the late '90s left the band without a label. This meant the album had to be shelved until three years later, when Kozelek managed to buy back the album from Island Records. Old Ramon is the final Red House Painters album, released in 2001 after being delayed from its originally-planned 1998 release date. The album, known for its more light-hearted feel compared to other Red House Painters albums, went through a troubled production that resulted in the band getting dropped from Island Records. Though Old Ramon keeps the polish of later Red House Painters albums like Songs for a Blue Guitar, the album has an added immediacy and vitality, particularly on surprisingly poppy tracks like Byrd Joel, a winning blend of folk and fuzz, and Between Days, which features some of the most luscious-sounding guitars ever heard on a Red House Painters song. When, on Void, Kozelek sings, Fill the void in me now Make it up to me, girl, a two lofty guitars join to make a potentially desperate song sound downright optimistic. Such is no longer the case with the Red House Painters.
