The Genius of Ray Charles is a 1959 Ray Charles album, released in October by Atlantic Records, the seventh album since the debut Ray Charles in 1957. The album consists of swinging pop with big band arrangements. It comprises a first half of big band songs and a second half of string-backed ballads. The Genius of Ray Charles sold fewer than 500,000 copies and charted at number 17 on the Billboard 200. Let the Good Times Roll and Don't Let the Sun Catch You Cryin' were released as singles in 1959. Some players from Ray Charles' big band are joined by many ringers from the Count Basie and Duke Ellington bands for the first half of this program, featuring Charles belting out six songs arranged by Quincy Jones. Let the Good Times Roll and Deed I Do are highlights, and there are solos by tenorman David Fathead Newman, trumpeter Marcus Belgrave, and on Two Years of Torture tenor Paul Gonsalves. The Genius. I've never heard anybody argue with the appelation. When this came out, he was established as a brilliant R&B singer, songwriter and performer. I was expecting more from this mono reissue of a classic album. The overall packaging is excellent as with all MFSL reissues but I find most reissues are hit and miss. There was a recent full reissue review of this album on HiFi magazine and it appears the stereo version on vinyl would be a better choice. Read more.
