AtlanticRhino's 2005 Genius & Friends is the end result of a project Ray Charles initiated a few months before his death in June 2004. According to James Austin's liner notes, Charles called Austin in December of 2003, asking if he could find the masters to an unreleased duets record Ray recorded in 1997 and 1998. Genius & Friends is a 2005 studio album by rhythm and blues musician Ray Charles, consisting of previously unreleased duets between Ray and musicians recorded during 1997 to 2005. The contributing artists were personally chosen by Ray. All I Want to Do Walden, McKinney with Angie Stone. You Are My Sunshine Davis, Mitchell with Chris Isaak. It All Goes By So Fast Ken Hirsch, Jay Levy with Mary J. You Were There with Gladys Knight. On Genius & Friends, Rhino Records smartly capitalizes on Charles's gift for investing any duet with both backbone and bluesy, velvety soul by rounding up recordings he made in 1997 and 1998 and swelling them with the sounds of artists he inspired. This album holds it's own ground quite well Ray's vocals are much better on this project. 11 Eleven Tracks were recorded between 1997 & 1998 and shelved for reasons we'll never know. 2 Two Tracks were recorded in 1991 and 1994. 1 One Track was recorded in Ray died in June of 2004, so it's safe to say his Vocals Which was probley recorded in 90's was spliced in.
