No production credits or dates given. The liner notes mention that Rozhdestvensky became the principal conductor of the newly-created USSR Ministry of Culture Symphony Orchestra in 1982, so it would have been recorded between then and the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.

He was commissioned to compose this work by the Ballet de l'Opéra National de Paris after the unexpected death of Ballets Russes choreographer Sergei Diaghilev in 1929 and following on the heels of Prokofiev's successful score for The Prodigal Son.
