Jean-Baptiste Lully's Alceste is loosely based on Euripides, but that's not really its point. It was pure Versailles spectacle, with airs, solos, declaimed recitatives, battle scenes, comic elements, and plenty of room for dancing for the entertainment of the Sun King, who is lavishly praised in a lengthy prologue.
