Liam O'Flynn is of course best known for his contribution to Planxty - possibly the most influential folk group of all time. Here, though, he pays tribute to his mentors, who included three of the greatest pipers of the 20th century: Leo Rowsome, Séamus Ennis and Willie Clancy. All the pieces are pipes solos, pure and simple: some played on a concert set, and some on the treasured flat set he inherited from Séamus. The jewel of the album for me is Willie Clancy's version of the wonderful seven-part jig The Gold Ring. Liam has also recorded this with other musicians on The. Liam OFlynn, The Fine Art of Piping. Despite Liam OFlynns involvement in many contemporary musical pieces over the years, this album of his is as pure as it gets really. This is an authentic solo album and the only accompaniment provided is by Liams own work on the drones and regulators. His playing is very steady, relaxed and there are no gimmicks involved. There is a great selection of tunes too. Solid reels coupled with some of the BIG piping jigs and split between the few airs and hornpipes give.
