The Serpent In Quicksilver consists of five solo keyboard works and one very interesting collaboration between Budd and pedal steel player Chas Smith. That piece, titled Afar, evokes some of the music Brian and Roger Eno and Daniel Lanois were making at around the same time to accompany a film about the Apollo space mission. Abandoned Cities is made up of two very long pieces for keyboard and electric guitar. In mood, if not sound, they bring to mind Robert Fripp and Brian Eno's No Pussyfooting album: the guitar is barely recognizable, and harmonic movement is mostly limited to long suspensions and resolutions. I'd only suggest this album to someone who doesn't already own Abandoned Cities, because the extra tracks might be worth the small amount of extra money depending on how much the listener could potentially enjoy them, but definitely are not worth the price of buying this compilation for those tracks alone. Harold Montgomory Budd born May 24, 1936 is an American avant-garde composer and poet. He was born in Los Angeles and raised in the Mojave Desert. He has developed a style of playing piano he terms soft pedal.
