The various ways the characters tackle The Book Report are hilarious. Overall, this is a good recording of fun songs. While it won't replace my Revival Cast disc, I do see a need to pull this one out more often. An homage to the best of Charles Schulz' comic strip, this music captures with luminescent precision the characters of that series. Each singer brings to his or her role the perfect tone to define that character, neither trivializing it nor falsely magnifying it. You'd think that would matter more on the original cast album initially released on MGM Records, but it doesn't, because the characterizations are so strong. Okay, Reva Rose, who plays Lucy, can't carry a tune, but then that's appropriate to her character. Anyway, a lot of the material is half-spoken, and even the sung parts depend more on enthusiasm than skill. So, the cast album charms as much as the show did. In this series based on Charles M. Schulz's comic strips, Charlie Brown, an insecure boy, and Snoopy, his mischievous beagle, strive to cope with everyday life as they are thrown from one eccentric misadventure to another.
