The result is as complete a musical picture of Jay McShann's early piano style and his orchestra at least how they sounded in the studios as is possible. Altoist Charlie Parker has five influential if brief solos best is Sepian Bounce and trumpeters Orville Minor and Buddy Anderson, altoist John Jackson, and Paul Quinichette on tenor also have their spots. However, McShann is clearly the main star of this definitive set by the last of the great Kansas City swing big bands. Highly recommended. Piano Jazz Masters, Vol. early recording of Jay McShann is nothing special, though the pamphlet that comes with the CD goes into much detail over each song as to its structure, contributors to the song, and so forth. It hypes too much about this being Charlie Parker's first recordings, though I suspect it isn't really so. There are sessions chiefly from 1941, some from 1942, and some from 1943. There are several different sax players on this disc. Walter Brown's delivery is flat and he sings each song exactly the same way. There is also Get Me On Your Mind, sung by Al Hibbler, one of several songs by Jay McShann to chart on Billboard. There is in addition Wrong Neighborhood sung by Bob Merrill.
