Rediscovering Lonnie Johnson. Lonnie Johnson was arguably the first guitar gunslinger. Throughout his prolific 40-year career, he was continually amazing as a player, having single-handedly invented the concept of the lead guitar solo, both in a country blues context and in jazz settings he worked with both Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington, for example, and his playing pre-shadowed the work of Charlie Christian, T-Bone Walker, and many others. Alonzo Lonnie Johnson February 8, 1899 June 16, 1970 was an American blues and jazz singer, guitarist, violinist and songwriter. He was a pioneer of jazz guitar and jazz violin and is recognized as the first to play an electrically amplified violin. Johnson was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, and raised in a family of musicians. He studied violin, piano and guitar as a child and learned to play various other instruments, including the mandolin, but he concentrated on the guitar throughout his. Don't Ever Love 2. There Must Be Lee Johnson no relation takes on the impossible task of playing Lonnie in this tribute album, with help from Philadelphia-based Blues Anatomy. They play with soul and great spirit, and Jef contributes his own virtuoso guitar-playing in his own style, as a tribute, rather than trying to slavishly mimic Lonnie. They open with a band doing Handy's classic St. Louis Blues, with excellent vocal work by Eddie Davis. The third song is a cover of the great early jazz piece by Louis Armstrong and his legendary Hot Fives, I'm Not rough. Rediscovering Lonnie Johnson honors Alonzo Lonnie Johnson 1899-1970, the blues star of the 1920s whos generally regarded as the creator of the now-common single-note guitar solo. Johnson was also a vocalist, and second only to Blind Lemon Jefferson in sales among male blues performers of that era. Yet theres something amiss with this tribute, which uses a Philadelphia-rooted cast to honor the New Orleans-born Johnson. The instrumentalists in Blues Anatomy, along with guest guitarist Jef Lee Johnson, do their parts in recalling an 80-year-old era. Blues Anatomy With Jef Lee Johnson: Rediscovering Lonnie Johnson Singing much raunchier and playing a little rougher than the jazziest classic bluesman Careless Love, 688 Glide
