Album
Past, Present and Future is Al Stewart's fifth studio album, released in October 1973 in the UK and in May 1974 in the US. This album is considered Stewart's first major album and it reached 133 on the Billboard Rock Album chart in 1974. He had taken on a different approach from his previous, folkier work, an approach that would stay with him for most of his career. All songs on this record have historical themes, each song representing a decade of the 20th century. The final song, Nostradamus. Past, Present and Future - Al Stewart. As good as portions of it were, Orange was essentially a transitional effort, the necessary bridge to Past, Present & Future, the record where Al Stewart truly begins to discover his voice. This is largely through his decision to indulge his fascination with history and construct a concept album that begins with Old Admirals and ends with Nostradamus and his predictions for the future. Past, Present and Future is my favorite Al Stewart album. It was recorded in 1973. This is folk music played by rock musicians. Stewart was a fine songwriter and he employed some of the best session musicians in London eg, Rick Wakeman Yes, Roger Taylor Queen, Tim Renwick. The songs are mostly historical. He writes about Nostradamus, Napoleon, Warren Harding, World War One, Ernst Rohm, and Admiral Halsey. My favourite Al Stewart album, for its time not too overproduced, transferred well to CD and a brilliant potted modern history lesson. Read more. Sending feedback. Album 1974 11 Songs.
