Though Bennie Maupin is listed as the leader, The Jewel in the Lotus defies assumptions about the hierarchy of musical composition and performance. A more selfless album is hard to imagine, said the review in Down Beat. Maupin may have taken his cues from Buddhism, but the resulting music implies a more expansive principle, about jazz in particular and self-expression in general. The most heroic soloists in the jazz canon-Louis Armstrong, Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, and others-accomplished their inventions with the assistance of an attentive ensemble, to whom they paid equal attention. Of the ECM titles that have remained unavailable on CD, woodwind multi-instrumentalist Bennie Maupin's The Jewel in the Lotus 1974 has long been considered a holy grail for collectors in search of a vinyl copy, and a title that's been on many fans' wish lists for release on CD. Well, it's finally happened and it's been worth the wait. With drummers Frederick Waits and Billy Hart-a Mwandishi alumnus-joining Summers, one might expect The Jewel in the Lotus to be both denser and more rhythmically charged. Actually I find this album a tad too experimental for the ECM label because of its reputation of being a soft or cool jazz-fusion specialist label, but overall it just happens to be one of the label's better releases along with the first Return To Forever. Bennie Maupin was one of the first musicians to record for ECM, playing on a Marion Brown record in August 1970, when the label was just a few months old. The album was recorded in March 1974, and could be described as a sequence of pulsing tone-poems, full of glowing, compound sound-colors and subtle interactions - a jazz-and-Buddhism-inspired floating chamber music that was way ahead of its time. Jewel in the Lotus is part of a little universe of experimental recordings made by membersalumni of Herbie Hancock's early 70s sextet - the group that recorded Mwandishi, Crossings and Sextant. Maupin surrounded himself with those he knew during the recording of this album. Besides Hart on drums we also get Waits doing the same. What he did was have one drummer coming through the left channel and the other coming through the right channel playing completely different things. A Jewel in the Lotus. He performs on saxophones, flute and bass clarinet. He is probably best-known for his membership in Herbie Hancock's Mwandishi sextet and Headhunters band, and for performing on Miles Davis's seminal fusion record, Bitches Brew.
