Feeling the Space is Yoko Ono's fourth solo album, her last one on Apple Records. The entire album adopts a feminist theme, focusing on issues affecting women in the 1970s. Its liner notes parody adult advertising, giving the telephone numbers, birthdates and vital statistics of the male band members. John Lennon appears as John O'Cean, with his number listed as Not for Sale. Lennon played guitar on the tracks Woman Power and She Hits Back, and sings a backing vocal line on Men, Men, Men. On Feeling the Space, Yoko Ono took complete control of her product for the first time. John Lennon only played as a side musician on one cut, with the rest of the songs ably abetted by some of New York's finest studio cats. The fact that the once-reviled Yoko Ono is inspiring a new generation of activists comes as no surprise if youve listened to Feeling the Space, her personal-is-political 1973 album that resonates remarkably forty-four years later. On such songs as the righteous chant Woman Power, the empathetic ballad Angry Young Woman, the hilarious proto-grrrl Potbelly Rocker, and the satirical Men Men Men, Ono sings in surprisingly straightforward fashion about the burdens carried by women and the mandate for feminism. Now Yoko finally has an album all her own out, and it bodes well for future experiments by the Murk Twins along these lines. For one thing, Yoko has excellent backup this time: one track features an Ornette Coleman quartet, and the rest find John, Ringo and bassist Klaus Voormann working out accompaniments that are by turns as frenzied as Yoko herself and quite restrained. It always sounds thought-out, carefully arranged, appropriate and with Yokos music thats saying something.
