In the 1950s, she was one of the most famous exponents of exotica music. Sumac became an international success based on her extreme vocal range. She had five octaves according to some reports, but other reports and recordings document four-and-a-half at the peak of her singing career. A typical trained singer has a range of about three. Most Yma Sumac albums seem to treat her like a musical sideshow freak. This album is a noteable exception in which every song is an example of Sumac's prodigious talent, not merely the preternatural five-octave range of her voice. There have been various other singers whose most outstanding characteristic is their vocal range, but few of them have Sumac's sensitivity, control, and overall expressive artistry. What a great collection of Yma Sumac recordings, ideal for anyone who wants to dip their toe in and listen to her amazing voice but also great for a fan of the divine diva from the Andes. Therefore, the question is, is it better to go with a collection which contains three previously unreleased cuts and four rare stereo mixes or an official album, namely her Voice of the Xtabay, which Richie Unterberger calls her first and most popular release. Since that first album isn't quite as pop-oriented as some of the material on The Ultimate, it may seem that the collection is preferable, yet that's not really the case.
