Back to the Egg , and Wings themselves, crash lands with the prosaic swing-band pastiche Baby's Request. Songs like Honey Pie from the Beatles' 1968 self-titled opus, or even You Gave Me the Answer from 1975's Venus and Mars , might have once felt charmingly retro. Not anymore. By 1979, this sound was hopelessly, devastatingly old-timey - and, of course, the opposite of what this album at one point seemed to be trying to do. Wings would manage one more huge hit, scoring their sixth U. 1 with a live version of the McCartney II track &quo. Back To The Egg was the ninth and final studio album by Wings, the band having acquired two new members in guitarist Laurence Juber and drummer Steve Holly. The album saw Paul work alongside producer Chris Thomas, who had trained as a producer during recording of The Beatles' 1968 eponymous classic the White Album. Recorded for the Back To The Egg sessions, though not included on the final album, was the eventual hit single Goodnight Tonight. Back to the Egg provides the final, obvious answer: no one. After ten Capitol albums with wife Linda, stalwart Denny Laine and various incarnations of Wings, McCartney jumped to Columbia last year in a multimillion-dollar deal that many thought would represent a new era for him musically. Despite the addition of Steve Holly on drums and Laurence Juber on guitar, Back to the Egg is just about the sorriest grab bag of dreck in recent memory. Herewith, a sample of the words from the single, Getting Closer : Im getting closer, my SalamanderWhen will we be there Oh no, dont answer
