In the Midnight Hour is a song originally performed by Wilson Pickett in 1965 and released on the 1965 album In the Midnight Hour also appearing on the 1966 album The Exciting Wilson Pickett. It was composed by Pickett and Steve Cropper at the historic Lorraine Motel in Memphis where Martin Luther King, Jr. would later be murdered in April 1968. Wilson Pickett's first album, from 1965, was a bit of a hodgepodge, including singles from as far back as 1962. Three of these tracks were actually issued as singles by The Falcons for whom Pickett sang lead before he started his solo career others were issued as singles before Pickett broke through as a national star with the title track. Pickett had his first success with a song called I Found a Love, which he wrote and performed with his group The Falcons in 1962. That song reached 75 on the Hot 100, and two years later Atlantic Records signed him to a solo deal. His first single with the label, Come Home Baby was recorded in New York with producer Bert Berns, and it went nowhere. In this song, Pickett is waiting till midnight to meet his girl for a romantic rendezvous. It's not clear if he's doing it at that hour to stay undetected, or if it's just more romantic.
