Notes

A CBS Records lacquer master (commonly referred to as an "acetate"). Basically, a unique, "one-off" lacquered disc cut with a disk recording lathe directly from a production master tape. Intended for “in-house” evaluation during the record mastering process.

In this case the substrate is aluminium, which is clearly visible from inside of spindle-hole wall and by a small sliver of lacquer that has peeled off the outside edge. Aluminium accounts for the disc also being completely flat, exceedingly rigid and cold to the touch. At the time of the cutting this lacquer, conspicuous by its absence, it appears the album title had had yet to be decided. Also, since there are also no matrix or catalogue numbers or mastering engineer's inscriptions present, it must have been cut for evaluation purposes prior to making the final master lacquers and subsequent test pressings etc. Nevertheless, it must have been a relatively late version, since the running order of the tracks appear to be the same as the final release. Labels have been manually typed with track information and times.

Procession is the thirteenth album from Weather Report. Although several previous Weather Report tracks included wordless singing, and And Then from Mr. Gone included brief lyrics, Where the Moon Goes was the band's first track including lyrics throughout, sung by members of The Manhattan Transfer. As a consequence, a planned November 1981 tour had to be canceled, and the bands management scheduled a new tour in the spring of 82. But by then, Robert Thomas Jr. Peter Erskine and Jaco Pastorius had committed themselves elsewhere. Procession is suffused with a unity and joy that makes this the best Weather Report album since Mysterious Traveller.
