A few months after Zevon's death, his son, Jordan, drove out to one of his father's storage spaces in the San Fernando Valley to begin the process of sorting through old recordings. He discovered over one hundred unreleased outtakes and demos in a piano-sized touring case. Warren Zevon traveled in the same musical circles as the L. Mellow Mafia crowd of the 1970s, and folks like Jackson Browne, Don Henley, Glenn Frey, Linda Ronstadt and Lindsey Buckingham often popped up on his albums as guests and musical collaborators. Rather, Preludes was assembled by Zevon's son Jordan, who discovered the tracks herein in one of Zevon's old storage spaces - more romantically the story goes anyway, he found them in a suitcase full of old reel-to-reel tapes, a treasure haul that yielded six CDs and 126 songs, all of which hailed from before 1976. Tellingly, there were no accompanying notes. Just 16 of those demos made it to Preludes, and of those, only six are unreleased compositions, and all are pretty damned good, rosy nostalgia or not.
