The Lotus Eater by W. Somerset Maugham. Increase Font Size Decrease Font Size. Most people, the vast majority in fact, lead the lives that circumstances. They are like train-cars travelling forever on the selfsame rails. They go backwards and forwards, backwards and forwards, inevitably, till they can go no longer and then are sold as scrap-iron. It is not often that you find a man who has boldly taken the course of his life into his own hands. The Lotus Eater is a short story by British W. Somerset Maugham in 1935 and loosely based on the life story of John Ellingham Brooks. It was included in the 1940 collection of Maugham stories The Mixture as Before. The story begins in 1913 with the narrator's visit to a friend on the island of Capri in Italy. The friend introduces the narrator to Thomas Wilson, who had come to the island for a holiday sixteen years earlier. The Lotus Eater tells the story of a London bank manager who after a visit to Capri, which enchants him, decides to quit working at 35 and Somerset Maughams compelling short story The Lotus Eater paints author's curious meeting with Thomas Wilson, the pivotal character of the story. A retired English bank manager, Wilson, who made the Italian island Capri his own abode, had a good deal of rumour going about him. No believer of all the tittle-tattle that went about him on the island and elsewhere, the author met him personally to discover his real character. Dejection: An Ode by Samuel Taylor Coleridge The Lotus Eater, Maugham's main character is a quite commonplace fellow. It is his weird appetite for life, which builds a story of much human significance. He makes a remarkable choice to leave his financial security and usual duty to live in the bosom of nature to enjoy unconditional leisure and pleasure. Somerset Maugham Hour TV Series. The Lotus Eater 1962. It looks like we don't have any Soundtracks for this title yet. Short Story: The Lotus Eater Author: W. Somerset Maugham Year: 1935 The will needs obstacles in order to exercise its power when it is never thwarted. The will needs obstacles in order to exercise its power when it is never thwarted, when no effort is needed to achieve ones desires, because one has placed ones desires only in the things that can be obtained by stretching out ones hand, the will grows impotent. 10 Jul 2018 Dermot W.
