This version of Vivaldi's perennially popular set of four violin concertos features Takako Nishizaki as soloist, accompanied by Cappella Istropolitana, led by Stephen Gunzenhauser. Nishizaki and Gunzenhauser deliver straightforward, impressively virtuosic performances of the concertos. Concerto alla rustica in G Major, RV 151. Antonio Vivaldi was born in Venice in 1678, the grandson of a baker and son of a man who combined the trades of musician and barber. He was to spend the greater part of his life in his native city, where, from the colour of his hair rather than any political inclination, he was known as il prete rosso, the red priest. The Concerto alla rustica in G major is in the usual three movements, with no detailed descriptive programme. The Concerto for Strings in G major, RV 151, commonly referred to as the Concerto alla rustica Italian for 'rustic concerto', is a concerto for orchestra without soloists by Antonio Vivaldi. It was written between mid-1720 and 1730, and is one of the composer's best-known concertos. The Concerto alla rustica, unlike some other of Vivaldi's concertos, did not include a descriptive programme. It was composed some time between mid-1720, and 1730, during which time Vivaldi was working on his Contest.
