Although the earthshaking Pool Spray and the string-dusted Manichee offer up bursts of hypnotically clean vocals, the majority of the record hews toward death-infused sludge and ripping displays of technical prowess. Digital zaps give way to dizzying blast beats on Follow Me, while twisted electronics devolve into meticulous fret workouts on Whistleblower, and frayed metal thrashing dominates Overthrow. Veil of Maya continue to evolve with each successive album, and their sixth studio album, False Idol , finds the band dipping their toes into delivering a more conceptual release, with the disc exploring the corrupting nature power can have over man, ultimately leading to their demise. We recently had a chance to speak with Veil of Maya guitarist Marc Okubo about the new album and concept, their unique way of approaching the disc with both a vocal and instrumental producer, his desire to get back on the road playing the new material and what fans can look for in 2018. Magyars range as both a harsh and clean vocalist is admirable, and really sells the further incorporation of streamlined songwriting though his hooks still dont grab as much as their contemporaries, his capabilities far outweigh the negatives brought forth by this. What Veil of Maya does best, however, is incorporate that prog-djent goodness into their sound, and here its no different. Although it does at times border on Periphery worship, it does just enough to separate itself from the aforementioned and be a memorable beast in its own right. Veil of Maya discography all.
