Sounds of the '60s is a long-running Saturday morning programme on BBC Radio 2 that features recordings of popular music made in the 1960s. It was first broadcast on 12 February 1983 and introduced by Keith Fordyce, who had been the first presenter of the TV show Ready Steady Go in 1963. In 1990 he received a Broadcasting Press Guild Award for Outstanding Contribution to Radio. By hosting such long-running and popular programmes as Saturday Club, Thank Your Lucky Stars, Round Midnight and Sounds of the 60s, Brian Matthew had one of the most familiar voices in British broadcasting. From 1961 to 1966, Matthew also presented the pop show, Thank Your Lucky Stars for ABC-TV where the stars mimed to their latest releases. One week Matthew had to wrestle with Frankie Townsend who was hoping for pop stardom. In 1976, he produced a wholly unexpected No 1 album, 22 Golden Guitar Greats, by Bert Weedon. The BBC said in a statement this afternoon: 'We were informed by close family and friends that Brian had passed away in the night. When Brian Matthew got his first broadcasting job for forces radio in Hamburg in the late 1940s, the chief announcer there future Tomorrows World presenter Raymond Baxter gave him two pieces of advice: dont go on air drunk, and dont swear. Of course I broke all the rules not intentionally. Seventy years later, Matthew would say this is your old mate Brian Matthew to listeners on Radio 2s Sounds of the Sixties, and that was exactly how they thought of him. I was fortunate enough to work with Brian who died last week on Sounds of the Sixties, which he presented until late last year. Matthew had presented Sounds of the 60s since April 1990. His last full show was broadcast in November 2016, but he returned in February for a final compilation programme. He also presented on TV, fronting ITV show Thank Your Lucky Stars which featured bands including The Beatles and the Rolling Stones. Sadly it was not to be.
