Pictures at an Exhibition is a suite of ten pieces plus a recurring, varied Promenade composed for piano by Russian composer Modest Mussorgsky in 1874. The suite is Mussorgsky's most famous piano composition, and has become a showpiece for virtuoso pianists. It has become further known through various orchestrations and arrangements produced by other musicians and composers, with Maurice Ravel's 1922 version for full symphony orchestra being by far the most recorded and performed. How museums can double their visitor. Madonnas third studio album, True Blue, was covered by a striking image of the diva photographed by celebrated photographer Herb Ritts. He would later re-team with Madonna for both the You Can Dance and Like a Prayer covers. After a handful of album covers featuring the Dropout Bear and a simple, Kaws-designed image for 808s & Heartbreak, Kanye West transitioned into high-concept art for My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. Teaming with artist George Condo for a series of paintings, the rapper matched the widescreen brilliance of the albums music with boundary-cracking art, including a controversial image of a demonic West being straddled by a nude angel. An image taken from the Hubble Space Telescope shows more than 3,000 stars in various stages of formation, glimmering through the marbled swirls of gas that will eventually condense into further constellations. Interior designers would swoon over this, and if Nasa ever falls on hard times, it could do worse than patent such gorgeous images as designs for high-end bathroom tiles or fabrics. Created for the National Museum of Scotland and showing only in Edinburgh, the exhibition Mary, Queen of Scots offers a rare opportunity to explore the private and public world of this charismatic monarch.
