In solid-state physics, the nearly free electron model or NFE model is a quantum mechanical model of physical properties of electrons that can move almost freely through the crystal lattice of a solid. The model is closely related to the more conceptual empty lattice approximation. The model enables understanding and calculating the electronic band structure of especially metals. The electrons which are not attached to the nucleus of a atom and free to move when external energy is applied are called free electrons. Electric field is a region around the charged particle within which the other charged particle will experience a repulsive or attractive force. Valence electrons are loosely attached to the nucleus of a atom. The moving free electrons will transmit electric current from one point to other. Materials which contain free electrons will conduct electric current. Materials which does not contain free electrons does not conduct electric current. Electrons are normally bound to atoms. This is because they carry a negative charge and atoms have a nucleus composed of positively charged particles. It is understood that electrons occupy 'energy levels' near the nucleus. In some sense, they sor. In some sense, they sorta 'stick around' the atom being attracted to its nucleus. In some materials, outermost electrons are quite loosely bound to the atoms and it takes very little energy to kick them off to move around freely across atoms.
