The U-Men was an American proto-grunge band, formed in Seattle, Washington in 1981 and active until 1989. They toured extensively across the United States and even had a song by the Butthole Surfers named in their honor. Their musically dirty sound was a forerunner for the later grunge bands to come out of Seattle. Following the release of Step on a Bug, became increasingly disenchanted with the direction the Seattle underground was heading and called it quits in 1989, Mudhoneys Mark Arm wrote in the liner notes of a recent Sub Pop retrospective. The U-Men had nothing to do with grunge. They were their own unique thing. I loved them and I still miss them. Just better. Track listing

This Pacific Northwest band went through many changes over the years, and made some happening noise in the process. This LP – their sole non-EP – was recorded during the time they used the talents of Tom Hazelmyer (same time as the Freezebomb 7”), and it’s a more straight forward howler than their earlier stuff. Still some tangential Birthday Party damage lurking, but it's mostly big grunge talking. And well.
