Africa is a song recorded by the American rock band Toto in 1981, for their fourth studio album Toto IV, and released as the album's third single on September 30, 1982, through Columbia Records. The song was written by band members David Paich and Jeff Porcaro. Critics praised its composition and Toto's performances. The song reached number one on the United States' Billboard Hot 100 chart and is the band's only Billboard number one. The song was at the top for a single week, the one ending February. Toto IV won a Grammy for Album of the Year, but voters didn't nominate Africa for either Record of the Year or Song of the Year they preferred Rosanna, which was nominated in both categories and won for Record of the Year. This is probably Toto's most famous song, but their guitarist Steve Lukather would like you to know that there is much more to the band: Toto were top studio musicians before forming the group, and known as some of the best in the business. Having spent an incredible amount of time producing the tune, the band became so tired of the song that they didnt want it on the album. Most Toto best ofs ignore the harder rocking songs other than Hold The Line, especially those from the underrated Turn Back album. On Disc 1 of this set you get three songs from Turn Back, including the excellent Goodbye Elenore and Live for Today. Stranger in Town, St. George and the Dragon and All Us Boys are all worthy rockers that normally don't make it on these types of compilations. Rockmaker from the first album is another great inclusion. All the classics are there - Africa, Rosanna, Stranger in Town to name but 3. Thoroughly enjoyable CD to sit back, enjoy and sing along to.
