The jazz album The ToshikoMariano Quartet featuring Toshiko Akiyoshi then Toshiko Mariano on piano and Charlie Mariano on alto saxophone was recorded in New York in 1960 and released on the Candid label. This Candid recording is not to be confused with 1963's similarly titled ToshikoMariano Quartet, a recording of mostly Leonard Bernstein songs from the musical West Side Story, released on the Takt Nippon Columbia label. A straight-ahead session from 1960, when pianist and bandleader Toshiko Akiyoshi and alto saxophonist Charlie Mariano were married and working together. Their regular band included bassist Gene Cherico and drummer Eddie Marshall, and this was the second album they released. Akiyoshi's playing was squarely in a Bud Powell-influenced bop mode, while Mariano was playing aggressive, surging solos with pronounced Charlie Parker ties. Track Listing.
