Although Toots Thielemans originally best-known as a guitarist had recorded on harmonica as early as 1950 and had led several sessions in Europe and six obscure titles for MGM during 1952-53, this Columbia LP was his first full-length American release and it really showcases his remarkable harmonica playing. He was known for his harmonica playing, as well as his guitar, whistling skills, and composing. According to jazz historian Ted Gioia, his most important contribution was in championing the humble harmonica, which Thielemans made into a legitimate voice in jazz.
