Tony Oxley floated Free Improvisations Northern English spearhead on implausibly arrhythmic pulses in the 60s. A rigorous retrospective could have included collaborations with talents as diverse as Georgie Fame and Cecil Taylor, but this appropriate 75th birthday celebration offers five unreleased slices of Oxley accompanying more sympathetic souls. Most welcome is a thirty minute 1993 scuffle with the pointillist piano of an uncharacteristically minimal Pat Thomas, Matt Wands. In 1969 Oxley appeared on the John McLaughlin album Extrapolation and formed a quintet with Bailey, Jeff Clyne, Evan Parker, and Kenny Wheeler, releasing the album The Baptised Traveller. Following this album the group was joined by Paul Rutherford on trombone and became a sextet, releasing the 1970 album 4 Compositions for Sextet. Tony Oxley born 15 June 1938 is an English free jazz drummer and one of the founders of Incus Records. A self-taught pianist by age eight, he first began playing the drums at seventeen. While in the Black Watch military band from 1957 to 1960 he studied music theory and improved upon his drumming technique. As its title indicates, this album was released to mark the occasion of drummer Tony Oxley's seventy-fifth birthday which occurred on June 15 2013. Fittingly, it is released on Incus, the ground-breaking label that Oxley established in 1970 with Derek Bailey and Evan Parker, frequently cited as the first independent musician-run record label in Britain just about true because of the inclusion of independent-which rules out The Beatles' Apple label-and of in Britain, which rules out Debut set up by Max Roach and.
