Flash Light is Tom Verlaine's fifth solo album. After a three-year hiatus, during which Verlaine lived in both New York and Europe, he released the album with a large amount of promotion and touring in the UK. It was recorded by Mario Salvati at Sorcerer 2, New York City except The Scientist Writes a Letter, engineered by Mark Wallis. Mixed by Paul O'Duffy at Sarm West, London. A Town Called Walker tells of a girl ominously moving back to her hometown because folks there are happy bees, a place where mama says you mind your pa. Say a Prayer documents the born-into-hopelessness of a guy revealingly named Whitey Black whose destiny is squirrel food, baby. The strangely beautiful and rocking Annies Telling Me uses an inescapable hook to say wet eyes and smiles go with the joy of discovering a new incompetence. Tom Verlaine is justly celebrated and regarded as one of rock's best and most innovative guitarists who has a gift for improvised guitar solos and interplay with other like-minded guitarists, best demonstrated by his work in the seminal NYC band Television with Richard Lloyd. His solo albums and songs are much less consistent, but also show his talents in spots.
