Long After Dark is the fifth studio album by American rock band Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, released November 2, 1982 on Backstreet Records. Notable for the MTV hit You Got Lucky, the album was also the band's first to feature Howie Epstein on bass and harmony vocals. Epstein's vocals are prevalent throughout the album and from that point on, became an integral part of the Heartbreakers' sound. Produced by Jimmy Iovine, who forced it in another musical direction than what Petty himself felt to be fit at the time. Iovine wanted to get back to the Damn the Torpedoes 1979 formula, which meant more rough rocking songs, while Petty was into a more acoustic mood after the Hard Promises 1981 album. Formed in 1976, the band originally comprised Tom Petty, Mike Campbell, Ron Blair, Stan Lynch, and Benmont Tench. In 1981, Blair, weary of the touring lifestyle, departed the band. His replacement, Howie Epstein, stayed with the band for the next two decades. In 1991, Scott Thurston joined the band as a multi-instrumentalist-mostly on rhythm guitar and second keyboards. However, Long After Dark does feature at least some minor variations. The biggest song on the whole album, You Got Lucky, does introduce some light synth backing and creates an interesting backbone to the standard heartland rock sound that Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers had been muscling through in the last six years as a unit.
