It'll End in Tears is the first album released by 4AD collective This Mortal Coil, an umbrella title for a loose grouping of guest musicians and vocalists brought together by label boss Ivo Watts-Russell. The album was released on 1 October 1984, and reached 38 on the UK Albums Chart. It features many of the artists on the 4AD roster at the time, including Cocteau Twins, Colourbox, and Dead Can Dance as well as key post-punk figure Howard Devoto, who sang Holocaust, one of two covers of songs from. Supergroup This Mortal Coil sprang from the 4AD label in the early 80s, covering '70s psych and folk songs and writing new experimental material. The crown jewel is Cocteau Twins' heart-wrenching cover of Tim Buckley's Song to the Siren, followed by a mournful, violin-soaked version of Big Star's Kangaroo. The projects first issue, 1984s Itll End In Tears, found Watts-Russell coaxing his rarefied roster of artists to cover his own musical favourites. Like most 4AD offerings, it came swathed in lush, gothic-romantic swirls of echo and reverb and was all the better for it. On Big Stars Holocaust, Howard Devoto sounded like a hollow, haunted phantom. By 1986s double-album the first on 4AD Filigree & Shadow, Watts-Russell had focussed the This Mortal Coil concept more on a few key contributors. Breathless singer Dominic Appletons rich baritone had become key, and future dance diva Alison Limerick reshaped Wires Alone and Talking Heads Drugs.
