Though not Russian nor gypsy, Theodore Bikel's renditions of traditional Russian gypsy songs are done with all the enthusiasm and spirit one would expect from the prolific performer. Backed by balalaika, accordion, violin, bass balalaika, and guitar, Bikel brings out the mystery and adventurous qualities of this vibrant music. Though Russian gypsy music might seem a little unpredictable to Western ears, as most songs progress through slow pensive passages only to swell with emotion and explode into heavy, hard-driving endings, the raw visceral energy of the music quickly becomes infectiou. In the 1950s, Bikel produced several albums of Jewish folk songs, as well as Songs of a Russian Gypsy, in 1958. He was a co-founder of the Newport Folk Festival together with Pete Seeger, Oscar Brand, and George Wein in 1959. In 1962, Bikel became the first singer besides Dylan to perform Blowin' in the Wind in public. Theodore Bikel had already recorded several albums for Elektra when he made Songs of a Russian Gypsy, but were those records anywhere as successful as this one 'Nyet' In fact, not only did 'Songs' far outsell any previous Elektra release by any artist, but it was also such a hit that the label rushed to record a sequel, Songs of Russia Old & New, that we've combined with its predecessor to form a great, Russian-themed twofer.
