After numerous revisits, this Weeknd album just isn't sitting well with me. Though I'm all for any efforts the artists of today make to change the R&B landscape, the lyricism on this LP sticks up like an unwelcome weed. Imagine this album as an indie film, and you've been given a free of Balloons is the debut mixtape by Canadian singer The Weeknd. It was released as a free download on March 21, 2011, then was later released by XO. The mixtape was also released on The Weeknd's official website. Its music incorporates electronic and contemporary genres, including R&B and soul, along with trip hop, indie rock and dream pop tones. The contributions to the mixtape's production came from Canadian record producers such as Doc McKinney, Zodiac and Illangelo, among others. On November. House of Balloons is the first of three critically acclaimed mixtapes released for free download by The Weeknd, which was released on March 21, 2011. This 9 track project was released under XO and Island Records. House of Balloons, along with Thursday and Echoes of Silence, was later remastered as the Trilogy album in 2012, with one extra song on each tape. The bonus track for this mixtape was his twenty-eighth song, Twenty Eight. The project, primarily produced by Illangelo and Doc McKinney, pushed the boundaries of R&B, with its influences of trip-hop, indie rock and dream pop and inco. Of course, the Weeknd are not without forebears- producers from Rodney Jerkins to Static Major and recently The-Dream have been pushing the sonic boundaries of R&B for some time now. Where the Weeknd differ, though, is that their source material pulls from the leftfield the title track re-purposes Siouxsie and the Banshee's Happy House, two songs here ride mutated Beach House samples, and their approach is more about building vibe and atmosphere.
