The Used began writing for Artwork in early 2008, and originally hoped to enter the studio shortly after Kevin Lyman's 2008 Get a Life Tour with Weezer front-man Rivers Cuomo as producer of the album. The Used expressed their interest in the raw sound found on Weezer's 1996 album Pinkerton, and hoped to create a similar sound by working with Cuomo. The band. Artwork is the fourth studio album by American alternative rock band The Used, released through Reprise Records in the United States and the UK on August 31, 2009. On The Used's fourth full-length album, Artwork, the rock band is distancing itself from musical descriptions like emo and screamo. Singer Bert McCracken, who mixes impassioned shrieking with earnest lyrics, rejects these genres and instead offers gross pop as another suggestion. Energized by its new direction, the Used pushes boundaries with the frenetic lead single Blood on My Hands, whose video features McCracken as a gleeful, blood-soaked vigilante. Review Summary: The Used make some adjustments in their sound and end up with an album that will require a few listens to really sink in. The guys in The Used have accomplished quite a bit, and have a lot they can be proud of. Over the course of their career theyve written a number of great songs and released a collection of diverse albums. This diversity, coupled with a great live show, helped their albums achieve gold and even platinum status and allowed them to headline around the globe. Despite these accomplishments, though, the one thing the band hadnt pulled off was an album that didn. Focus on the artwork, as the Used are telling you via the title of their fourth album. It's an ugly beast of a picture of a man shoving a syringe labeled ART into an arm bearing WORK scrawled in blood on it. What it all means is unclear - is art being injected into work, is art the drug - but what is evident is that the Used still take all this emotional bloodletting very, very seriously indeed
